Public supports S.A. tour
NZPA staff correspondent London Almost two-thirds of the British public support next month’s England rugby tour of South Africa, according to a survey. In other findings, 54 per cent supported sports links with South Africa while 79 per cent opposed the British Government’s putting pressure on the England players to call off the tour. The results of the survey have been published in the May issue of “Rugby World” magazine which says a re-
presentative sample of 1402 people aged 15 and over were canvassed by telephone. The survey’s research manager, Ms Meril James, said she had been surprised by the number in favour of links with South Africa. “But what interested me most was the attitude to Government interference. I suggests that there is a genuine desire among the general public to see sport totally divorced from politics, to let the individual decide,” said Ms James.
