Science historian changes job

PA Auckland Dr Michael Hoare, who has given up a distinguished academic career as a world authority on the history of science to work full time for the Boys’ Brigade as national secretary, took up his new post in Wellington yesterday. Dr Hoare is so convinced of the value of the organisation that he resigned his job at the Alexander Turnbull Library where for the last four years he has been head of the manuscripts section. Dr Hoare, a Briton, came to New Zealand 10 years ago as a James Cook Fellow. He has a doctorate of philosophy in the history of science from the Australian National University. Dr Hoare first joined the Boys’ Brigade when at school, and looking back he believes it was one of the best moves he made.
