Ballot call rejected
NZPA-Reuter Sheffield Leaders of Britain’s 180,000 miners rejected yesterday calls for a national ballot on whether to continue a month-old strike. Several people were injured as 1500 police struggled to hold back more than 2000 miners outside the building where the National
Union of Mineworkers executive met. Four out of five of Britain’s 175 pits have been affected by a strike against proposed closures of unprofitable mines. The union’s president, Mr Arthur Scargill, said that since 80 per cent of miners were already on strike there
was no question of N.U.M.’s changing its policy. The executive voted 14-10 against holding a national ballot and decided instead to convene a special delegate conference on Thursday. Moderates had pressed for a national ballot
