Petition over earthworks
Residents concerned about earthworks at Fendalton Mall have presented a petition to the chairman of the Waimairi District Council, Mrs Margaret Murray. The petition wants a 6ft high fence, removed during earthworks at the mall on March 28, restored. It also seeks the return of plants and shrubs removed during the work. The 100 petitioners believe that not meeting these conditions contravenes a planning decision made in 1969 by the Supreme Court on Fendalton Mall. Many residents are worried that the land at the centre of the dispute, a 900 m landlocked section next to the mall, will be turned into car-parking space. The land is zoned residential but under the reviewed
District Scheme, not yet in force, has been designated as residential Gp. This means it could be used for car-parking but not for any other commercial use. Residents opposed to the rezoning of the section have until April 30 to lodge objections with the council.
