Most car wreckers working within law

Most Christchurch car wreckers have their records in order and are working within the law, according to the police. The Christchurch police have recently checked the records of more than 40 wrecking firms, and found the response “positive and helpful," according to a police spokesman. He said that the police had to return to about a third of the firms to make sure suggestions made re-

garding record keeping, disposal of plates and papers, and other aspects of the business had been adopted. Wreckers had made a “genuine effort” to fully comply with the SecondHand Dealers’ Act under which they were licensed, the spokesman said.

The check was one which was part of police routine, but which had not been done for some time, so it was decided to check all of the businesses in one big effort.
