Official report, prices

Some Halfbred fleece wool prices increased up to 10 per cent at the Christchurch wool sale yesterday. The market over-all was firm, only crossbred cotts, poorer style second-shear, and crossbred lambs’ wool losing ground on the prices at Napier on Thursday. Competition was well spread with a good bidding tone, according to the official report issued by the Christchurch Woolbrokers’ Association in conjunction with the Wool Board and the Council of Wool Exporters. Compared with the Dunedin sale on April 5, prices at Christchurch for extra fine and fine Halfbred fleece were firm, medium and strong descriptions were 7.5 to 10 per cent dearer, and Halfbred skirtings were firm. Compared with the Napier sale held on April 12, crossbred fleece was in sellers’ favour, cotts 2.5 per cent cheaper, better style second-shear at par to 2.5 per cent dearer, poorer style 2.5 to 5 per cent cheaper, crossbred lambs par to 2.5 per cent cheaper, skirtings firm and oddments 2.5 to 7.5 per cent dearer. The Wool Board gave minimal support to the market by bidding on about 1.5 per cent of the offering and having a few bales sold or passed to it. The offering was 27,599 bales from all Canterbury districts, the Chatham Islands, the West Coast, and Nelson. The end of season fleece wools were mostly cotted and discoloured and even some of the early shorn wool showed discoloration because of the weather over the last month. Lambs and second-shear wool made up the bulk of the offering and these were, of all qualities, length and colour, according to the official report. Good style and well-picked lots received the price premium they deserved. Principal buyers were the Far East, New Zealand mills, Eastern and Western Europe.
