Tariff move applauded
PA Wellington Federated Farmers has congratulated the Government and manufacturers on the agreement reached to move from import licensing to tariff-based protection for the manufacturing industry. Its president, Mr Peter Elworthy, described the decision as an historic one
which would benefit all exporters, consumers, and taxpayers as well as efficient manufacturers. “While the rate of change is slower than that which Federated Farmers promoted, its certainty and predictability will assist manufacturers to adapt to a more competitive environment,” he said.
