Rickerby returns to the ring

Kevin Rickerby, the Canterbury light middleweight champion, returns to the ring when the Canterbury Boxing Association holds its amateur tournament at the Richmond Workingmen’s Club tomorrow afternoon. He will be opposed by Joseph Feaveai (Fidow’s gym), but Rickerby (Bell’sKearns Motors), with his natural skill and speed, should start his season with a win. Fifteen bouts have been carded, and one of the most constructive should be that between Shane Everest (Barry’s-Monier) and Wayne Barber (Oamaru). Everest is a former national junior and present New Zealand intermediate title-holder, while Barber

performed with credit in the junior ranks at the last national championships. Two other Oamaru competitors will be travelling to the tournament. Adam Horan is to meet Tony Enright (Barry’s-Monier) and Gary Grace has been matched against Peter Woods (Ashburton). All of the Christchurch gymnasiums are represented on the programme, which signals the start of a busy period for the sport. The Irish touring team meets a New Zealand invitation team on May 3, another C.B.A. tournament is on May 6 and Woolston Workingmen’s Club has scheduled a tournament for May 13.
