Club squash starts
The 1984 New Zealand Permanent division one inter-club squash competition will begin on Tuesday with one more men’s team than last year and one women’s team fewer. Burnside has entered two teams in men’s division one to bring the total to 12 and remove the need for a bye. Two full rounds will be played with a grand final scheduled in early October.
The other teams entered are Ashburton, Christchurch
(2), Christchurch Football, High School Old Boys, Linwood, Marist, Suburbs, and Sumner (2). Only eight teams will contest women’s division one even though two clubs, Lincoln and Mount Pleasant, will make their debuts in the premier grade. Christchurch and Sumner will have only one team this season instead of two and suburbs have pulled out altogether. Also entered are Bum-
side, Lancaster Park, Linwood, and St Andrew’s. Because of the relatively small number of teams the women will play three full rounds with the winners of the last two rounds fighting out a grand final for the Kathy Hargreaves Shield. Altogether there will be 16 men’s divisions and nine women’s divisions, involving more than 270 teams.
