Street robbery action promised

PA Auckland Loutish and hooligan behaviour was depriving people of the freedom to walk Auckland’s streets, Chief Superintendent Brian Wilkinson has said. He promised that measures would be taken to curb street robberies and assaults, but would not dir vulge details of plans. “Decent people are finding it more difficult to have the. freedom of their city without being harassed,” he said. In the latest incident on Wednesday a youth, aged 19, was robbed at knifepoint by four youths he had approached in a restaurant

and asked for street directions. The youth, cut on the lip by his assailants, was robbed of $25, credit cards, and his driver’s licence. Mr Wilkinson said robberies were often for petty amounts of money or articles of clothing, such as jackets. “Measures will be taken to curb the activities of some of the youths who cause problems for the decent people who want to use the city,” he said. Parents, social organisations, and the community also had a part to play in stopping “loutish and hooligan behaviour” in the inner city.
