Aust, market short of scrip

Strong demand for metal stocks by local and overseas investors underpinned a firm market on Australian stock exchanges yesterday, with brokers reporting difficulty in filling orders. The all-ordinaries was up 5.3 at 761.7, the all-industri-als up 4.0 at 985.3, and the all-resources up 6.3 at 583.6. Brokers said that overseas institutions were again keen buyers — having reassessed the market after recent weakness in the Australian dollar.

BHP closed 15c up at $14.25, coming off its highs after announcing that the Veilfin No. 1 well in Bass Strait has been plugged and abandoned.

Major gains by metal stocks were CRA 10c to 618, MIM at 373 and WMC 432 both up 6c, and Bougainville up 8c at 274. Gold stocks were mixed, with Central Norseman up 10c at 610, but Emperor down 10c at 410. Peko rose 4c to 540.

Coal stocks firmed with Queensland Coal Trust at 116 and Oakbridge 90c both up two cents, while Howard Smith rose 5c to 380. Pancontinental added 4c to 135 c, and ERA 3c to 150. The market supported partners in the Eclipse No. 1 well, with Weeks Petroleum up 10c to 600 and Weeks Australia up 8c at 183 c. Consolidated Petroleum added 8c to 105, while Hartogen at 325 and Ampol Exploration 450 were both up sc.
