Top French trotting stallion stolen

NZPA-AP Lisieux, France Hadol du Vivier, one of the world’s leading trotting sires, was rustled from a Normandy stud farm early yesterday and held for ransom, said a spokesman at Lisieux police headquarters. The spokesman said he believed a “large ransom” was demanded, but could give no details. He would not say how the rustling was carried out, but other police sources said a group of men took the horse

on Wednesday evening, ignoring a number of other valuable trotting sires in adjoining stalls, including Jet de Prapin and Jiosco. Racing sources said that there had been a ransom demand of 2 million francs (about $NZ350,000). The 11-year-old stallion, owned by Mr Henri Levesque and kept at Cheffreville-Tonnencourt, is estimated to be worth more than 10 million francs (about JNZI.79 million). He won 23 of 24 races in 1976 and 1977.
