Good tone to Napier wool sale
PA Napier Bidding was slow, although there was a good tone to the Napier wool sale yesterday, according to the official report. Principal buyers were eastern and western Europe and New Zealand carpet mills, with support from the United States and China. A total of 27,722 bales, including 1069 bales of scoured wool, was offered. There was no bidding from the Wool Board. Compared with the Dunedin sale of April 5, the market for full fleece and longer second-shear wool was in sellers’ Shorter and disco&ured second-shear was 2W per
cent cheaper, while lambs’ wool was in sellers’ favour. Clothing oddments of average to good style were 5 per cent to 7% per cent cheaper and poorer styles were 2% per cent cheaper. The catalogue consisted of 67 per cent second-shear, 7 per cent full fleece, 6 per cent lambs’ wool, 18 per cent shorter clothing oddments, and 2 per cent combing oddments. The second-shear clip was said to be very well grown, with a stronger, more robust fibre , because of the excellent growing conditions. However, some secondshear wools on offer were showing varying degrees of water stain (yellow discolo-
ration) and others showed very little shed preparation. Discoloured and inadequately skirted wools were discounted accordingly. The adjusted weighted average sale price was 299.21 c a kilogram. Based on this, a Government supplementary payment of 6.9 per cent will apply to all wool sold at the sale and all wool sold privately from midnight on April 11 to midnight on April 12. The market indicator was 299 c. Official range of prices: Fleece: Good 300 to 315 Average to good 290 to 299 Average 270 to 289 Secdid-snear, long: Gtffd to super 350 to 365 Good 330 to 349
