Innings victory to West Indies

NZPA-ReuterSt John’s, Antigua

Joel Garner, with five for 63, and Malcolm Marshall, three for 51, pushed Australia over the brink and gave West Indies a four-day win in the fourth cricket test by an innings and 36 runs yesterday. Australia, 236 behind on the first innings, was dismissed for 200 in less than five hours.

The West Indies’ victory was the first test match to yield a result in Antigua, and gave them an unbeatable 2-0 lead in the fivematch series and the Frank WorrelL Trophy. lndies’ bowling was always thoughtful and

aggressive and Australia’s batsmen were ready victims.

After the West Indians had added five runs to their overnight 493 for nine, Australia set off in search of runs and the openers, Greg Ritchie and Wayne Phillips, made the most of the loose opening spell by Marshall and Garner. Then Garner had Ritchie caught behind with a ball that cut away from him before he crashed through Phillips’ defence, leaving Australia at 57 for two. Allan Border and Kim Hughes briefly arrested the slide before the former departed with the scot&on 97 when he was caught by

Gordon Greenidge off Eldine Baptiste. After Hughes followed him back to the pavilion with the total on 116, Australia’s chances of prolonging the match looked slim.

By tea, Doug Jones had joined ■ the spectators and David Hookes followed when he drove Michael Holding to Greenidge at short extra-cover.

Tom Hogan, who had more than once proved a plucky foe for the West Indies in this series, also made a quick exit and Marshall brought the end by taking two wickets with consecutive balls, at 185.

The last pair, Geoff Lawson and Carl Rackemann,

repeatedly played and missed, yet remained for more than half an hour before the latter finally succumbed. While the test series is decided, the one-day series of four is still open, with the score tied at 1-1. The third one-day international is due to be played on April 19 in St Lucia and the fourth in Jamaica, immediately before the final test, which starts on April 28.
