Tommo’s Tornado works well
Special correspondent Hastings Tommo’s Tornado turned in another sound trial at the Hastings track yesterday morning, further enhancing his chances for the Juvenile Handicap at tomorrow’s Hawke’s Bay meeting. All tracks were open with fast work mainly confined to the plough and No I grass. Both provided fast footing. Tallboy, went with a stablemate, Zeb, over 800 m in 50.25, the last 600 in 37.15. Tallboy went a bold race for second at Waipukurau and could be an outside chance in the Leopard Handicap. Any rain will enhance his chances. Watch Me, turned on the speed over 800 m on the plough in 48.25, the last 600 in 36.15. Vesper galloped strongly over 800 m on the plough in 48.5 s but is a doubtful starter tomorrow unless there is rain. Beready worked on the No 1 grass and returned 40.5 s and 41.3 s for two quiet
600 m runs. Fog descended at intervals throughout the session preventing the timing of some important final trials for Saturday. These included the gallops of Burletta and Olene. Burletta will run in the second leg of the T.A.B. double at the Hawke’s Bay meeting and is ready for a top effort. Her trainer, Patrick Campbell, is obviously disappointed the filly has drawn so wide in the 1400 m event but will still run her. Jim Cassidy has the mount. Olene, will take on Commissionaire in the weight-for-age Ormond Memorial and she looks to have trained on in fine style since her win in last Saturday’s Hawke’s Bay Cup. Tommo’s Tornado ran a solo 600 m on the plough in 37.45. He was suffering from a stone bruise after finishing sixth in the Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes. He has obviously recovered and rates a top chance tomorrow.
