Soviet hero

Sir,—ln reply to M. W. Shepherd’s letter (April 10) in which it was said that the Soviet pilot who shot down the Korean airliner may have received Russia’s highest award for heroism, “The Press” article of April 6 merely echoed pure supposition on the part of Western embassies in Moscow. They say no more than that they do not know for what else it might have been awarded. On a more general line, I would condemn the U.S.S.R. for the incident but we must see that the event was symptomatic of the cold war and could happen again to either the United States or the U.S.S.R. if we learn nothing from it. Both sides spy on each other and it has been suggested more than once that the C.I.A. uses civil airlines for this purpose. Countries such as New Zealand and my own, England, should take no part in the superpowers’ bullying and should openly denounce it. They crave support from other nations, ideologically, strategically, and economically so they will respond. We must not take sides but hold them at arms’ length until they change their stance.—Yours, etc., RICHARD PAWSON. April 10, 1984.
