Nuclear weapons
Sir, — At present, 73 local government bodies throughout New Zealand have declared nuclear weapons free zones. They include Christchurch, Lyttelton, Wairewa and Mount Herbert. The Akaroa County Council is the only local body on Banks Peninsula yet to declare itself. Councillors have expressed the wish for more evidence of concern about the nuclear weapons issue among the 1700 or so ratepayers, many of whom are not resident in the county. The Banks Peninsula Group for Nuclear Disarmament is conducting a poll among as many of the resident
ratepayers as possible and urges non-resident ratepayers to write or call their councillors or the group. This is an opportunity to express an opinion on how they see the consequences of the ever-growing scale and cost of “deterrence.” — Yours, etc., STEVE LOWNDES, P.O. Box 35, Akaroa. April 6, 1984.
