Posa ‘not remotely dangerous’

PA Auckland George Posa, the man found unfit to plead on a charge of the murder of his landlady, is “not remotely dangerous” to the public, says the chairman of the Auckland Hospital Board, Dr Frank Rutter. This is why Mr Posa is in the “open” ward of Oakley Hospital, M 7, rather than the medium security M 3. Local residents have complained to Auckland newspapers that Mr Posa regularly wanders outside Oakley. Both Dr Rutter and the board’s superintendent-in-chief, Dr Leslie Honeyman, yesterday refused to discuss details of Posa’s case.

Dr Rutter said no-one had complained to the Oakley authorities. “If they had, they would have been invited to talk the matter over.” Dr Rutter would not talk about the Posa case, but said that in France, some killings were recognised as crimes of passion. “People who commit these are not subject to the full wrath of the law.” He refused to comment further. Dr Honeyman said steps had been taken to “protect the patient from harassment.” He refused to say what steps, but said the harassment was from the news media.
