Missing climber’s tent found
A tent, believed to belong to a missing West German climber, has been found under a bunk in the Hooker Hut at Mount Cook.
Police hold grave concern for the man, Mr Horst Bergmann, who has been missing for more than a month. A New Zealand Air Force Iroquois helicopter was used for searching the Mount Cook area yesterday and a commercial helicopter was used to fly foot searchers into the higher areas, said the Timaru police. Mr Bergman’s wife has flown out from West German and has been waiting at Mount Cook to hear any news of her husband. She identified the tent found in the hut as being identical to her husband’s.
Police have had a good response from the public in possible sightings of Mr Bergmann, but none had been positive. Foot searchers will coni tinue scouring the areajthis j week. ;
