Two more contenders for TV warrants

PA Auckland Two more contenders emerged yesterday in the battle for private television warrants.

Independent TV of New Zealand announced it would take over the warrant application of the old City TV.

The second contender is the TV3 Consortium, headed by the former TVNZ head of entertainment programmes, Mr Tom Parkinson. It is thought to have the backing of the cinema and tourist company, Kerridge Odeon Corporation, Visionhire Holdings, Ltd, and Radio Pacific.

Visionhire, a public company listed on the stock exchange, is a television rental and video specialist. Thp group will be

formally launched at a champagne function tomorrow at which “Miss Universe,” Lorraine Downes, will be present. Invitations do not name members of the consortium.

The Owens Group earlier yesterday announced the formation of Independent TV of New Zealand and said it was negotiating to merge with CTV Television, one of the early private television contenders.

Earlier this year, the Owens Group bought the video production company, Video Workshop, which had been in receivership, and installed Mr Don Hutchings and a former TVNZ executive, Mr Richard Wall, as joint managing directors. Mr Hutchings waft also managing director ® CTV

Mr Hutchings and Rr Wall were named yesterday as managing directors of the new ITV. Mr Alan Cocker, a former Northern Television executive who has been working on the preparation of CTV’s private television proposals, will be general manager. Mr Hutchings said ITV intended to apply for a television broadcast warrant and would also pursue pay television and lowpower television interests. He said ITV also intended to do productions and coproductions for television broadcast.
