Assurance given on jobs

PA Wellington The Shop Employees’ Association said yesterday it had been given reasonable assurances about the employment security of its members after the takeover bid of the Aucklandbased retailer, George Court, by D.1.C., Ltd.

The association’s secretary, Mr R. J. Campbell, said he had discussed the matter with D.l.C.’s general manager, Mr Graeme Hitch. “We have to accept that changes in ownership and structure will occur in the industry,” said Mr Campbell. “Employment security depends on strong, viable enterprises. Provided that in the process of rationalisation jobs are not lost, or earnings cut, the union need not oppose changes.”
