1984 Audi Quattro unveiled

The West German Audi firm has unveiled its 1984 version of the famous four-wheel-drive Quattro. It has been improved in a number of ways compared with the previous model. Most importantly, it is now fitted with a thirdgeneration anti-lock braking system which automatically cuts out if the driver engages the differential locks used mainly for extra traction in slippery conditions. Lower and stiffer suspension and extra-wide wheels shod with ultra-low-profile Pirelli P 7 tyres are now fitted. Intermediate ratios in the five-speed gearbox have been altered in response to criticisms that second gear was too low.

Solid-state technology has replaced the older model’s rather antiquated and inadequate instruments. All the major functions are digitally displayed. A microchip voice synthesiser now issues spoken warnings if anything is amiss. The traditional velour upholstery and trim has also been replaced by a combination of leather and tweed.

In Britain the Quattro price has gone up by more than £2600.
