Aust, market

NZPA Sydney Trading in situation stock's and option linked issues, notably BHP, on the Australian stock market yesterday lifted turnover and supported the industrial sector while weakness in physical metal prices and a sell off in oil and gas stocks depressed the resource sector.

The all ordinaries index was down 0.4 at 756.1, with the all industrials up 3.5 at 981.2 while the all resources fell 3.4 to 577.1.

Among the busier option linked stocks BHP fell 15c to 1440.

Among metals, WMC fell 6c, to 426, Bougainville lost 4c to 266 and CRA at 608 and E-Z Industries 530 were down 2c. Gold stocks were unmoved while coal issues were narrowly mixed.

Santos fell 4c to 696 and Crusader lost 12c to 318.

Partners in the Eclipse oil well eased with Weeks Australia down 8 at 175 and Weeks Petroleum 10c off at 590. Mercantile Credits succeeded in its offer for Alliance Holdings at the Chase Manhatten and MLC Insurance groups sold 15 million shares after Mercantile lifted its offer 5c to 155 a share.

Westpac rose 5c to 390. ANZ at 560 and National 358 were little changed. Building material issues were broadly higher with Boral at 355, Pioneer Concrete 163, Monier 165 and Hardie 343 all gaining. Woolworths at 234, Coles 370 and Myer 194 all firmed.
