Jack Frost wins
NZPA Sydney The former Riccartontrained galloper, Jack Frost, was the first of four winners on Saturday for the top jockey Ron Quinton at Warwick Farm, Sydney.
Jack Frost won the $12,000 St Patrick’s Day Handicap over 2200 m.
The Hong Kong-owned Aristoi gelding was running last going into the home turn, had improved two places coming out of it, then after balancing set out after the tearaway leader, Guria.
Quinton weaved the gelding in what has become known in Australia as “Kiwi style” through the ninehorse field until he reached the front 50m from home and held off a fast finish from the New Zealand-bred Just for Tristram.
Jack Frost has performed only moderately since arriving from New Zealand last year with a record of three wins from 10 starts from Michael Pitman’s Christchurch stable, but his new trainer Darby Armstrong on Saturday put that down to slow acclimatisation, and is aiming the former New Zealander for the Sydney Cup.
