Pakistan salvages draw
NZPA-Reuter Faisalabad, Pakistan Pakistan survived a minor batting scare before the second cricket test against England ended in the expected draw on the fifth and final day at the Iqbal stadium in Faisalabad on Saturday. Pakistan, 97 behind on the first innings after England declared at 546 for eight at lunch, slumped to six for two as the pacemen, Neil Foster and Graham Dilley, fired out its openers, Mudassar Nazar and Molisin Khan, in the first five overs. Dilley struck again by snapping up Qasim Omar to make the score 56 for three before the first-innings cen-tury-maker, Saleem Malik,
again played outstandingly well for 76 to guide Pakistan to 137 for four at the close. The draw maintained Pakistan’s prospects of winning their first test series against England. The home country leads, 1-0, with the third and last test starting in Lahore on Monday’ England on Saturday morning cpntinued its plucky response to Pakistan’s first innings' of 449 for eight declared, under the influence of the captain, David Gower (152), and Vic Marks (83). The first session produced three records after England resumed at 361 for six. Gower, on 113 overnight, and Marks, 45, lifted their partnership to 167 and beat England’s
previous best seventh-wicket stand against Pakistan of 159 by Alan Knott and Peter Lever at Birmingham in 1971. Gower’s praiseworthy 427minute innings, including 15 fours, ended when he moved out to drive the medium-pacer, Mudassar, and was stumped by Anil Dalpat. . Marks, who batted for 222 minutes, hit 10 fours and easily beat his previous test best of 12 not out, was bowled driving loosely at the fast-medium pacer Sarfraz Nawaz. England’s total provided another landmark, being its highest in a test in Pakistan and surpassing the 507 at Karachi during the 1961-62 series. PAKISTAN First innings 449/8 dec.
