West Indies protest

NZPA-AAP Port of Spain The Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board of Control has made an official protest about Kim Hughes’ tactics during, and comments after, the four-day match which finished at Guaracara Park, Pointe-a-Pierre last Monday.

Mr Allen Sammy, secretary of the Trinidad and Tobago board, issued a statement during the second day of the second test at Queen’s Park Oval, Port of Spain, saying that a note of protest was forwarded to Mr Stephen Camacho, secretary of the West, Indies Board of Control, for transmission to the Australian Cricket Board.

The statement said, “With specific reference to the ugly incident and the unfortunate statement made by Kim Hughes, captain of the Australian team, when interviewed after play in the four-day match against Trinidad and Tobago at Guaracara Park, to the effect that he was not interested in the welfare of Trinidad and Tobago’s cricket, the board has had no official comment from the Australian tour committee on the incident and has forwarded a note of protest to the secretary of the West Indies Board of Control, for transmission to the Australian board for such action as it deems necessary.”

The Australian team could also run into trouble over the failure of the bowlers to bowl the designated number of overs in last Wednesday’s second one-day international at Queen’s Park Oval. The Australians bowled only 37 overs at a rate of about 4.8 minutes an over.

International regulations allow for a rate of four minutes an over and the Australians should have bowled 46 at the West Indies.

Mr Sammy said that the Australian over rate had been “drawn to the attention of the West Indies board for such action as it considers necessary.”
