Prison sentence for two burglaries

Two men who stole almost $lO,OOO worth of groceries after burgling a Main North Road dairy on two occasion last year, were each sent to prison when they appeared for sentence before Judge Forgarty in the District Court yesterday. On charges of burgling the Phoneix Dairy on August 24, and December 6, last year, Mark Anthony Eathome, aged 27, and Mark David Shaw, aged 23, were each sent to prison for 12 months. Eathorne, who was also admitted on a charge of stealing a $5500 ulitity vehicle the property of Cooper Henderson Motors, Ltd, on November 23, last year, was sentenced to four months in prison. This, said the Judge, was to be cumulative to the 12 months imposed for the burglary offences. The burglaries bore the mark of professionalism and were committed to meet a ready market, said the Judge. The amount of property taken was substantial, he said. Both defendants had been sentenced to periodic detention for five months in January after their joint conviction on a charge of burglary said the Judge. At the time of the offending both men had been under serious financial pressures. Money obtained from the sale of the groceries, $l4OO each, had been used to pay debts and for family expenses. The Judge was told by counsel (Mrs D. M. Orchard), that the proprietors of a mini market who were charged with receiving the groceries, were each convicted and fined $l5OO and ordered to pay

compensation of $5OO each. Eathorne took the utility vehicle because, he told the police, it was identical with his own vehicle which was in a bad state of repair. BURGLARY CHARGES Bail was opposed for a youth charged with burgling the Kaiapoi home of the member of Parliament of Southern Maori, Mrs Whetu Tirikatene-Sullivan. Nicholas John Hay, aged 18, a labourer was remanded in custody without pleading to March 16. In opposing bail Sergeant Caldwell said the defendant had no fixed abode and appeared to have been sleeping in the house while Mrs Tirikatane-Sullivan was in Wellington. To a question from the Judge, Sergeant Caldwell said $l5OO worth of unrecovered property was involved. He said the alleged offence took place between February 22 and March 4. Hay was remanded to the same date on a charge of breaking into a locked shed on the Main North Road at Kaiapoi on March 4. He did not plead. DRUG CHARGE No plea was entered by a man charged with importing a cannabis preparation into New Zealand on February 28. Terence Peter Dorrell, aged 25, an assistant manager (Mr A. C. Hughes-John-son) was remanded in custody to March 16. . Mr Hughes-Johnson said, , because it was an indictable offence, bail would be 'sought in the High Court. I TRIAL

bery, wearing a mask by day to facilitate this purpose, and stealing a $550 motor-cycle. Wiki, aged 20, unemployed (Mr S. C. Barker), was remanded in custody to March 30 for the taking of depositions. He was remanded to the same date on a charge of unlawfully possessing a sawn off 12 gauge shotgun. The police say the offences took place between February 26 and March 5. FURTHER REMAND A further remand for one week was sought by a man charged with assisting Bruce Douglas Cameron, the nerve gas extortionist, to avoid arrest Christopher Edward O’Donoghue, aged 22, unemployed, was said by the police to have committed the offence on February 29. Counsel (Mr T. W. Fournier), in seeking the remand, said a plea would be entered on March 13. ESCAPE CHARGE Mark Huia Bain, aged 24, unemployed was remanded in custody to March 16, on a charge of escaping from Paparua Prison on February 28. He did not plead.
