Dixon named ‘athlete’
PA Wellington The New York marathon winner, Rod Dixon, was named Athlete Of the Year tonight by the Athletic Writers’ Association. Track and field journalists voted John Walker second with 16 votes compared with Dixon’s 20 and Anne Audain third with 12.
They said Dixon displayed “courage and brilliance” to win in New York last October. They noted Dixon had withdrawn from last year’s national cross-country team and had pulled out again this year but said he was likely to contest the marathon and 10,000 m at the Los Angeles Olympics.
