‘Another Queenstown’
parliamentary reporter If Hanmer Springs were in Europe it would be a world tourist centre, or at the very least another Queenstown, according to the tourism spokesman for Labour, Mr M. K. Moore (Papanui).
Hanmer Springs could bring together the facilities to match those found at Rotorua for hot springs and Queenstown for ski-ing, he said.
Hanmer Springs should figure significantly in any plan to develop the South Island’s alpine assets, which
were not being used fully — they were not even recog-nised,-Mr Moore said. Six million people skied in North America and spent more than $lOOO million a year on clothing and equipment, he said. Such large disposable incomes could be attracted to New Zealand.
