FCL changes management

PA Wellington Fletcher Challenge has reshuffled its top management and decentralised its structure.

The company has appointed Mr Barrie Downey as an assitant to the managing director, Mr Hugh Fletcher. This follows the abolition of the chief executive’s office established only a year ago when Mr Carl !lyan was brought in to form a triumvirate with the chief executive, Mr Ron Trotter, and Mr Fletcher to head the company. In January his year, Mr Ryan was appointed president and chief executive of the Vancouver-based Crown Forest Industries. Fletcher Challenge announced yesterday that Mr Fletcher would become the chief operating officer for all New Zealand-headquar-tered activities.

In an associated move the company has further decentralised its structure ex-

panding its major reporting sectors from eight to 12. The forestry and wood products sector has been split into three. Tasman Timber is headed by Mr Downey, who is an executive director of Fletcher Challenge. Forestry is headed by Mr Lin Stoddart. This comprises Tasman Forestry. Ltd, Kaiangaroa Logging Company, and Hikurangi Forest Farms. Ltd (50 per cent owned). Wood panels, under Mr Neville Darrow, consists of the Fletcher wood panels operations on Taupo, Hamilton and Auckland.

The two other new sectors are property and motors, gas and appliances. Property has been split off from the construction and property sector. The new sector will be led by Mr Jack Hodgetts and includes the group’s extensive property investments, property management interests, shopping centres and development Projects, all operated by Challenge Properties, Ltd. Motor gas and appliances has been split off from the rural and trading sector, and is now headed by Mr Fraser Boddv.
