Historic cottage could be saved
The owners of a historic cottage in Yaldhurst Road will be asked to consider relocation proposals by the Waimairi District Council, should they decide to demolish it.
The cottage, at 386 Yaldhurst Road, is wooden and originally stood in Hazeldean Road before being shifted to its present site. Its two-storey front section is thought to have been prefabricated and shipped to Canterbury about 1860. The cottage owners had advised the council of their intention to demolish it. However, the council’s town-planning committee was told yesterday that the owners were now undecided about the building’s future. They were prepared to consider its removal to another site.
Waimairi’s district planner, Mr D. D. Hinman, said that the council had no power under its District Scheme other than to ask the owners to consider the proposals.
