General forecast: In the west of the South Island, showery, with cooler south-westerlies developing; in the east, mainly fine and mild, but colder, showery weather is expected to spread as far north as Banks Peninsula later. District forecasts: Canterbury: Fine at first but cooler south-westerlies spreading north and reaching Banks Peninsula towards midnight, followed by showery weather, chiefly about the coast. Marlborough: Mainly fine but scattered showers in the morning, mainly in the west.

Nelson: Showers at first but later becoming mainly confined to the western ranges. Buller and Westland: Cloudy, with occasional showers. Tomorrow: Coastal showers in Canterbury and showers in Nelson and Marlborough, but clearing in Buller and Westland. Extended range forecast for the South Island, to Monday: Areas of rain in Otago and Southland should spread to Canterbury and Marlborough tomorrow, clearing from the south on Sunday or Monday, southerlies predominating.
