Batting slump halted

NZPA-AAP Georgetown, Guyana The left-handers, Allan Border and Wayne Phillips, brought on Australian batting disaster to a halt and set the stage for a thrilling finish to the first test against the West Indies at

the Bourda Ground in Georgetown yesterday. The pair, who came together with the Australian second innings in tatters at 60 for five, put on 125 in 169

minutes before Border was run out for 54 in the third over after tea. The pair stretched the Australian lead from 109 to 234 on a wicket which kept low and allowed the fast bowlers movement off the seam.

When bad light and later rain terminated the day’s play at 4.35 p.m., Australia was 202 for six with an over all lead of 251. Phillips was 71 and Geoff Lawson seven.
