Pakistan wins test

NZPA-AP Karachi Pakistan won the first test of the three-test series against England by three wickets yesterday, but at times its victory, which had seemed virtually assured, looked doubtful. It was Pakistan’s third victory against England in 32 years. The first came in 1954 at the Oval and the second at Lord’s in 1982.

When England concluded its second innings yesterday at 159, Pakistan needed only 65 runs to win, but the home team lost seven wickets before it reached the target after the tea interval.

The victory that at first appeared so easy for the Pakistanis ran into danger when a procession of home team batsmen were quickly returned to the pavilion. England’s spinners bowled superbly. Cook, in a devastating spell, took five wickets for 18 runs. In the first innings, he had taken six wickets for 65 runs in 29 overs, 12 of which were maidens.

Among the Pakistani bowlers, the spinner, Abdul Qadir, took eight wickets in two innings, while another spinner, Tausif Ahmed, had four wickets to his credit.
