Joint venture
Trentham-based General Motors will not be handling the four-door hatchback that Nissan and. General MotorsHolden will jointly produce for the Australian market.
The car, which is based on the Nissan Pulsar, will give Nissan’s Melbourne assembly plant a greater output and also align it with the Australian Federal Government’s drive for greater efficiency in the automotive industry.
GM-H will supply many of the body panels for the car, but the co-operation between the two companies is not a pointer towards a Nissan-GM-H merger, but rather to the Japanese company’s policy of affording technical and production
assistance to other manufacturers.
With the Isuzu-based Holden Gemini probably getting towards the end of its tether, Australian GM-H dealers are in need of a replacement. The product of the joint venture, which seems likely to be more Pulsar than Holden, could be just what they need.
