Incomes drop
Americans incomes dropped in 1981 despite the Federal income tax cut started by President Ronald Regan, the Census Bureau reported. Average household income after taxes was $U517,500 (126,950), down 2.6 per cent from 1980 after discounting inflation. This was due primarily to increasing unemployment and the onset of recession in the second half of the year. — Washington.
