Protected areas survey

Sir,—The protected natural areas ’programme, which is being co-ordinated by the National Parks andßeserves Authority, will between last year and 1990 survey the surviving areas of native vegetation, wildlife habitat and natural landscapes in each of the 268 ecological districts into which New zSHndhas been dividedz* will those areas most of

conservation action and other areas where appropriate development can take place. In the logging moratorium region between the, Cook and Haast Rivers there are five ecological districts and two part-districts. A technical liaison committee has been set up to oversee the programme in this region. It comprises representatives of the following departments and agencies: D.5.1.K., Lands Forests, Agriculture, Wildlife, and Biological Resources Centre.
