Arms race ‘slowed’

PA Auckland The world economic situation has slowed the arms race, says Mr Jan Martenson, United Nations Under * Secretary - General for disarmament affairs. The economic cost of nations trying to cope with inflation and other economic problems meant that they had less money to spend on arms. The third factor which gave him hope, he said, was public opinion. A well informed public, and public involvement in disarmament, were important.
