Felling row goes on
The controversy over clear-felling of native forests in the Nelson district continued yesterday with conservationists saying that they have discovered a third area being felled in violation of Government policy. On Monday, the Minister of Forests, Mr Elworthy, admitted that some felled stands of beech forest in the Blue Glen “could have been left intact.” He said the Forest Service had no intention of circumventing the Government’s indigenous forest policy and the whole thing was “a matter of interpretation.” The president of the Native Forests Action Council, Ms Gwenny Davis, said the Minister should give a straightforward instruction to the Forest Service to stop clearing native forest in the Nelson district.
