Buyers return to market
Buyers, taking advantage of the lower prices offered, re-entered the New Zealand sharemarket yesterday. Prices firmed in moderately active trading and the NZUC industrial index rose 18.16 points to close at 1296.11. The index had lost 75.23 points in the previous three trading sessions. Market leaders to improve included Brierley Investments up 15c, Feltex 10c, and Fletcher Challenge 10c. However, Alex Harvey, Carter Holt, NZ Forest Products, and Yates Corporation were prominent among the falls. Rex Consolidated firmed 3c ahead of the news of its proposed merger with Cable Price Downer. CPD, in turn, rose sc. The mining and oil sector was mixed and quiet, in contrast to Monday’s bullish, active session.
