Students go to U.S. —Minister
NZPA-AP Kuala Lumpur Out of 58,000 Malaysians studying abroad, 13,000 — the largest percentage — study in the United States, said the Prime Ministers’ Department Minister, Mr Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.
Speaking at an orientation course for 67 students about to leave for Japan, he said that 12,500 Malaysians were studying in Britain, 11,000 in Canada, and 9000 in Australia.
The rest were in other countries such as New Zealand, India, Pakistan, and
Egypt Until 1981, when the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Muhammad, announced a “look east” policy under which Malaysia will forge closer links with Japan and South Korea, the Government sent almost all Malaysian students to western universities. Since then, a few hundred students have travelled to Japan and South Korea, particularly to learn the countries’ work ethics.
