Standard for cycle helmets drafted
Wellington reporter The draft standard for cyclists’ helmets is expected to be released for public comment soon by the Standards Association. The committee drafting the standard wanted to make the requirement for resistance to penetration
lower than that in the Australian standard. Originally it was intended to lower the energy absorption level so as to reduce weight and bulk. But the main bulk of the helmet is its shell, which has to resist penetration levels similar to those for motor-cycle helmets. The committee considered motor-cycle helmet standards were too high for bicycle helmets, and has reduced the level.
