Names misspelt on two coins
NZPA-AP Manila, Philippines After misspelling the scientific name of an eagle on a Philippine coin, the Central Bank also has misspelt the name of a fish on another new coin but refused officially to acknowledge the error. The new misspelling was brought to the attention of a Manila newspaper by a reader who pointed out that the name of a species of Goby found in the Philippines is Pandaka pygmaea and not Pandaka pygmea as it is spelt on a new 10 centavo coin.
Mr Cesar Lomotan, superintendent of the bank’s minting facility, claimed that both spellings could be used interchangeably and said the fish’s name had been provided by the Bureau of Fisheries. The former Central Bank governor, Mr Jaime Laya, who is now Education Minister, said last December that the name of the PhilipSiine eagle, Pithecophaga efferyi, was spelt Pthecobhaga jefferyi” on the new 50 centavo coins. More than 77 million of the coins are now in circulation and are considered legal tender.
