$1/4M bequest rejected

NZPA-Reuter Kiel The‘West German University of Kiel has refused to accept a 500,000 mark ($NZ290,000) research grant bequeathed by a former professor because of his part in the killing of handicapped children under the

Nazis. “Moral reservations about the activities of Professor Werner Catel in the years to 1945 are more important than the money he set aside in his will for research,” said a spokesman for the university senate. Professor Catel, who died in 1981, aged 86, left his post as head of the university’s children’s clinic in 1960 when his involvement in

Hitlev’s euthanasia programme became known. From 1939 his job was to evaluate official reports on “severe hereditary illnesses” and decide whether thousands of mentally and physically disabled children should be classified

as worthless and killed.

The spokesman said the senate rejected the grant unanimously. Professor Catel’s will had specified that the money be used to fund “Werner Catel Scholarships” in medical and scientific research.
