Sophisticated car thieves uncovered

Christchurch detectives have uncovered at least three groups of sophisticated car thieves “stealing to order” in the city. “Three groups are under investigation at the moment,” said Detective Senior-Sergeant Roger Carson yesterday.

Detectives believed that the groups comprised mechanics, panelbeaters, and painters who had young persons steal the vehicles for them.

The groups then fitted the vehicles with new “identi-

ties,” including number plates and ownership papers, before selling them. The police have blamed the groups for the rising number of stolen cars which are not recovered.

In the month to February 10, 233 cars were stolen in Christchurch. Of these, 29 vehicles valued in total about $55,500, were not recovered.

During the same period. 53 motor-cycles were stolen and 19 of those, valued in total at more than $35,000, were not recovered.

Thirteen trailers were also taken and 10 of these, valued in total about $BOOO. were not recovered.

The thieves are stealing “middle of the road" cars. The most expensive vehicle stolen recently was an $BOOO Holden Statesman. Some recovered stolen vehicles had been found to have changed “identities.” The police also felt that car thieves in Christchurch had links with groups in Invercargill. Car owners have been urged to be more conscious of their vehicle’s security.
