Gold stocks lead Aust, rise
NZPA-AAP Sydney Australian stock exchanges opened strongly and maintained the rises throughout yesterday following higher base and percious metal prices in overseas markets and strong performances by the London and New York stock exchanges. The all ordinaries index closed. 8.8 points ahead at 735.1, with the all industrials 6.6 up at 9662 and the all resources gaining 10.7 to 551.7.
Gold stocks were the outstanding performers, with GMK up 80c at 1130 c, Central Norseman up 40c at 690 c, Poseidon on 35c to 495 c, Peko up 20c to 570 c and Emperor rising 10c to 410 c. CRA rose 14c to 540 c, WMC 17c to 412 c, MIM 13c to 345 c, Bougainville 8c to 250 c and EZ 6c to 510 c. BHP added 5c to 1320 c, while CSR rose 12c to 372 c. Coal stocks were mixed, with Umal up 12c at 362 c and Coal and Allied up 5c at 280 c but Howard Smith fell 5c to 385 c. TNT fell 8c to 200 c, while Mayne Nicless rose 5c to 245 c and Brambles closed at 280 c, steady after accounting for dividend.
