NZPA-AP Phoenix, Arizona Tanzania’s Zakarie Barie outkicked Australia’s Rob de Castella in the last kilometre and went on to break the world’s record by six seconds with a time of 27:43 in the second annual Continental Homes 10-kilometres road race at Phoenix at the week-end. The 27-year-old de Castella
finished second at 27:47, which also betterd Michael Musyoki’s previous standard. The defending champion Alberto Salazar, who set an American 10-kilometres record with a 28:01 clocking last March 5, came in eighth at 28:18. Nancy Rooks, 24, of Canada, won the women’s division with a Canadian national record time of 32:14.
