Canon Bean
Sir, — I write to defend the memory of Canon Walter Bean, of
St Mary’s, Addington. As a younger member of a family of seven, all of whom attended Addington Schcol from primer one to standard six, I have been able to cover many yeais of school life. To the best knowledge of us all, attendance at Bible Class was never compulsory. I never attended or was pressured in any way to do so. The class was held at 8.30 a.m every school morning and Canon Bean used to entertain the early arrivals by chasing mistresses and masters, including the headmaster, and pupils who joined in the fun. I will say no more than that Canon Bean was and still is admired as a kindly, respected and loved friend of Addington. — Yours, etc.,
PATRICK R. COOTE February 29, 1984.
