Chch women surfers shine

Special correspondent

Women lifeguards from the Christchurch region can now claim total dominance of rescue and resuscitation events following South Brighton’s crushing win at the Westpac surf life-saving championships at Westshore at Napier at the week-end.

Their deductions of 3.00 compare with Waimairi with 9.50 and New Brighton with 11.10 deductions.

Nobody at the beach could recall a deduction as low as this year’s winning figure and considering the recent change in the scoring system, the South Brighton team’s performance was outstanding.

"It was a classic case of a perfect team performance and one the girls can be justifably very proud of,” said the South Brighton women’s coach, Mr Russell Forster.

Their win also incorporated a measure of good fortune, especially in the draw for team positions. “We are fortunate to have both very good swimmers and girls who are good drillers on land,” he said. “But the luck came when our draw was perfect in this respect” The senior surf race was almost a South Island benefit with the first three, Rickie Laing, Lars Humer and Alistair Park, all from St Kilda in Dunedin.

The first across the line was the visiting Australian Dwayne Thuys by about 20 metres, but as an invited competitor he does not qualify for a New Zealand title.
