Shipping news Tonnage up at Lyttelton
A significant increase in cargo handled at the Port of Lyttelton was recorded for the month of January compared with the corresponding month last year, the Lyttelton Harbour Board’s marketing manager has reported. In a -report to the board’s trade and commercial development committee, Mr Peter Morgan said that 259,084 tonnes of cargo was handled through the port during the month, compared with 141,928 tonnes for the same period last year, an increase of 117,156 tonnes.
Figures for tonnage handled by roll-on roll-off vessels and coastal imports and exports showed the largest increase, mainly because of the interisland trade serviced by the Spirit of Free Enterprise. The vessel, owned by the Pacifica Shipping Company, was introduced to the service last May. Coastal imports rose by 173,532 tonnes and roll-on, rolloff cargo by 178,048 tonnes, for the four months from last October. ARRIVALS Heroj Sanjanovic (6 a.m.), 11,749, Wellington (Seatrans).
